Tanya King Strategic Advisor

30 Years in Service to Communities

I'm an Alaska-based philanthropic strategist and attorney. My career has moved through complex litigation, tribal child welfare, programmatic operations, and philanthropic grantmaking — all in service of the same goal: helping communities take care of their people and their places.

I started as a litigator at an international law firm in San Francisco. From there, I spent nine years at Casey Family Programs, strengthening tribal organizations' capacity to improve child and family well-being in Alaska Native and American Indian communities. In 2019, I moved to Alaska to join Rasmuson Foundation, where I served as a Program Officer and later as Director of Programs — managing grants and program-related investments statewide, including leading outreach and making recommendations for nearly $50 million in COVID relief funding to Alaska nonprofits.

Today, I serve as a subsistence attorney for a Tribal nonprofit in Alaska, representing Tribal interests in fisheries and natural resource issues. I also advise nonprofit and tribal leaders through my own practice, Chickadee Consulting, chair the board of the Alaska Food Policy Council, and serve on the steering committee of the Alaska South Coast Partnership.

What I bring to advisory work is the same thing I've brought to every role I've held: the ability to take an unorganized idea and build it into something focused, effective, and strategic. I've personally overseen more than $100 million in awarded grants and impact investments. I know what well-run grantmaking looks like from the inside — and I know what it takes for an organization to get there.
